Big numbers, big waves, big deal

Energy Voice Out Loud, under the tender new management of Allister, took a look at the big numbers coming out of OGUK’s big report this week. Imports are rising, it seems, but politics remain a tangled web. Are companies too scared of allegations of greenwashing to make the case for the energy industry? 
The US is coming to terms with the fall out from Hurricane Ida, and Ed caught us up on a drillship that got buffeted by the big waves. The Globetrotter II seems to be taking on water, and pressure is on owner Noble to ensure the safety of its men and equipment. 
Babcock claimed success this week with the completion of the sale of its helicopter division to CHC. Given the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is still considering whether to approve the merger, this seemed a little early to call.

Mexican tragedy, North African best enemies and Cambo kerfuffle

This week, the team reflects on the shocking and fatal explosion on a Pemex platform in the Gulf of Mexico. Allister asks whether the to-ing and fro-ing in Mexican oil policy could have played a part.

Tracking the hydrogen transition – reflections on session two

Company commitments are piling up for hydrogen prospects, but the industry is still in its early stages, and finance options still constrained. Fasken’s Shahrooz Nabavi and Deloitte’s Daniel Grover get together to mull over how best to prep the way for new projects, reflecting on session two of Hydrogen – Tracking Transition. 
The industry is getting more efficient and price changes are coming, but the crucial question of demand volumes remains elusive – for now. 10 Point Pod 08 – CCUS

We’re not going to be able to stop burning hydrocarbons in time to hit the 2050 target. But what if we captured them instead? 
With the UK government planning to set out a review on the costs of transitioning in the autumn, EY’s Graham Beal and Costain’s Dave Richardson got together to drill into the case for carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS). 
New businesses will have to step up to meet industrial need for CCUS. The UK is well positioned to store CO₂, the North Sea will be an ideal home to capture gas, but we’re going to need to determine a commercial basis in order to get things going.

The H2 strategy has landed, climate report deep dive, and a ‘dream’ deal

This week, Mark and Damon were joined by special guest James Close, NatWest Group’s head of climate change. 
They ran the rule over the UK Government’s veeerrrrrry long-awaited hydrogen strategy, and discussed whether it went too far, not far enough, or in the wrong direction entirely. 
James then gave his thoughts on the bombshell IPCC report and the impact it can have on the way companies invest and do business. Also, the vital role methane emissions reduction efforts could play in buying industries some time. 
And finally, Damon lifted the lid on a deal between BHP and Woodside, which was described as a “dream” by some, but resulted in a slump in share prices.

Inspiring a new generation of energy leaders – EVOL ✕ My Energy Future

The energy sector must continue to expand and evolve if key climate targets are to be met. Young people will be key to driving this change, filling tens of thousands of energy roles in the coming decades. 
But just because there will be opportunities aplenty, that doesn’t mean the industry can afford to sit on its hands and assume young people will flock to it. 
Fortunately, training and skills provider OPITO is alive to the need for a proactive approach. 
It has developed My Energy Future to inspire and inform a new generation of energy people with the help of “energy influencers”, two of whom joined EV editor Mark Lammey for this latest edition of EVOL X.

Highway to hydrogen, stages of grief, and calls for Cresswell’s head

EVOL is on the highway to hydrogen this week with news that the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group is looking to build fuelling stations across the north of Scotland. It’s an ambitious plan with a lot of enthusiasm behind it, but does it have the wheels?

One of our sales team will set up as a user of the Energy Voice website, apply your trial allowance and email you to provide access instructions. 
You will have two weeks of unlimited access from the point at which the trial allowance is instigated. At the end of the trial period you will retain your user account but will only be able to view a restricted number of articles as a free registered user (currently four per month). 
You will not be automatically enrolled on a paid subscription at the end of the trial period. A member of the sales team will contact you to find out if you are interested in subscribing, provide options for subscription and payment if so, and process the transaction with your authorisation. Alternatively you can purchase a subscription directly from the website. 
We retain the right to terminate trials and free registered user accounts without notice or explanation.
