An Acorn, a scandal and a CGI hotel

What if you planned an industrial cluster and no one came? The UK government opted not to pick the Scottish offering this week, going instead for south-of-the-border options HyNet and East Coast Cluster. Amid calls for a recount and questions about just how many jobs a cluster may provide, the EVOL team pick over the politics and try to see a way forward. 
One story seemingly going nowhere fast is Lekoil, which has run into an incredibly disputatious situation with its Nigerian subsidiary. Accusations and law suits are flying, with a happy ending looking unlikely. 
‘The energy transition looks different in different places’ is a thought that is often bandied around. In the North Sea, Amazon is making a horror TV show called The Rig. Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia, the country’s investment fund is working on plans to convert an oil rig into a luxury hotel. Different folks, different strokes.

More Jackdaw, more gas, less Jackie Bird

After some days contemplating the lack of gongs for Energy Voice at the Scottish Press Awards, normal service resumes, sans Allister and Jackie Bird.

Up, up and away

Oil and gas prices are up, while Ed’s gas supplier is down, having joined the great retail collapse. Little seems to be able to stem the tide of rising prices, raising concerns around inflation and hopes for a mild winter. 
Even while prices are higher, companies do not seem to flooding back into exploration, raising the risk of further price rises in future. While the UK has a degree of energy security, a number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa are less well covered. These tensions may bubble over at COP26, with tough questions around emissions vs unemployment. 
Finally, Hamish and Ed reminisced about a grandiose plan to export renewable energy from Morocco to the UK. Similar plans have come – and gone – in the past but there is a sense of changing export priorities.

Virtual decomm games, the end of North Sea production, and Asian offshore wind

This week, the team discuss the latest findings from the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) that suggest the end of North Sea production is nigh. The numbers were released as the UK finds itself in the midst of a gas crisis. Ironically, a power cut initially booted Damon out of the recording. Is this a sign of things to come? 
Allister brings us up to speed on the smoke from the decommissioned Ninian Northern oil platform. He also caught us up on his trip to a new £1.6m simulator designed to transform the way oil platforms are decommissioned. 
We also hear from Damon about the opportunities for Scottish companies in China’s ballooning offshore wind market, and the potential for wind power in the Philippines.

Oil spin, floating conferences and Fyne time
