The regular weekly Out Loud show sees journalists from Energy Voice come together to highlight and discuss the biggest stories of the week, and there are lots of other special series and in-depth episodes too. Appropriately enough, the show absolutely crackles with energy!

Money talks, and is increasingly talking about new energy and the transition opportunities. In many ways, the challenges of a new energy system run in parallel to a new financial system, with new risks and new opportunities.
EY’s Tom Groom and Glenmont Partners’ Joost Bergsma get together to talk us through just how things are changing – and what is needed to keep up the pace.
Government will play a part in such discussions, but it must help facilitate investment from the private sector if the progress required will be delivered on time.

The COP Shop 01: COP26 preview and the role of green finance
Tuesday Oct 26, 2021
Tuesday Oct 26, 2021
This is The COP Shop, the brand new series from Energy Voice Out Loud in paid partnership with NatWest, diving into the most important climate summit in history, and the role of green finance in the battle against climate change.
In this episode, EV Europe Editor Allister Thomas is joined by co-host James Close, Head of Climate Change at NatWest, and special guest Rachel McEwen, Chief Sustainability Officer at SSE.
Together the trio discuss the role of COP26 in raising climate finance and the importance of the private sector in bolstering that sum, how green finance is helping decarbonise domestic energy supply in the UK, and the definition of a “Just Transition” on a global level.

An Acorn, a scandal and a CGI hotel
Friday Oct 22, 2021

What if you planned an industrial cluster and no one came? The UK government opted not to pick the Scottish offering this week, going instead for south-of-the-border options HyNet and East Coast Cluster. Amid calls for a recount and questions about just how many jobs a cluster may provide, the EVOL team pick over the politics and try to see a way forward.
One story seemingly going nowhere fast is Lekoil, which has run into an incredibly disputatious situation with its Nigerian subsidiary. Accusations and law suits are flying, with a happy ending looking unlikely.
‘The energy transition looks different in different places’ is a thought that is often bandied around. In the North Sea, Amazon is making a horror TV show called The Rig. Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia, the country’s investment fund is working on plans to convert an oil rig into a luxury hotel. Different folks, different strokes.

More Jackdaw, more gas, less Jackie Bird
Friday Oct 15, 2021
Friday Oct 15, 2021
After some days contemplating the lack of gongs for Energy Voice at the Scottish Press Awards, normal service resumes, sans Allister and Jackie Bird.
More than week after Shell’s plans for Jackdaw were snubbed, you’d think the Government might have provided some answers, right? Wrong! Worry not though, we’ve got some analysts to share their thoughts on the situation.
It’s then time for a good old fashioned, hard working, salt of the earth rebrand. LNG giant Qatar Petroleum is no more, and it could mark a step change in the Middle East. Ed ‘the powercut’ Reed tells all.
And the renewables bonanza in Asia doesn’t show any signs of slowing up. There’s been big offshore wind developments in Vietnam and Indonesia – Damon’s scepticism could be a thing of the past.

Jackdaw, Gas and Jackie Bird
Friday Oct 08, 2021
Friday Oct 08, 2021
Allister’s back from Glasgow having been ejected from the Scottish Press Awards (what do you mean Jackie Bird hasn’t listened to the Energy Voice podcast?).
Kicking us off, Hamish talks Jackdaw as regulator OPRED has decided not to approve the Shell gas/condensate development in the UK. Talk about timing amid a gas crisis…
Speaking of which: Damon Evans talks new measures to develop natural gas across Asia, shifting away from emissions-heavy coal. But how is this going to play out across Europe as winter approaches?
Rounding us off, AT is on Boris Johnson’s comments hinting at potential investment for the Acorn CCUS project in Aberdeenshire. With a decision just weeks away, the Scottish business community has its fingers crossed.

Up, up and away
Friday Oct 01, 2021
Friday Oct 01, 2021
Oil and gas prices are up, while Ed’s gas supplier is down, having joined the great retail collapse. Little seems to be able to stem the tide of rising prices, raising concerns around inflation and hopes for a mild winter.
Even while prices are higher, companies do not seem to flooding back into exploration, raising the risk of further price rises in future. While the UK has a degree of energy security, a number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa are less well covered. These tensions may bubble over at COP26, with tough questions around emissions vs unemployment.
Finally, Hamish and Ed reminisced about a grandiose plan to export renewable energy from Morocco to the UK. Similar plans have come – and gone – in the past but there is a sense of changing export priorities.

10 Point Pod 09 – Protecting our natural environment
Tuesday Sep 28, 2021

Not all solutions to the world’s problems grow on trees, but some do. In the rush to transform the energy industry, and create jobs, it can be easy to overlook the impact of growth on nature.
Keeping us focused on the green and pleasant lands, EY’s Richard Betts and Tim Kirkwood from Anders Holch Povlsen’s Wildland Limited catch up on how best to save and nurture the flora and fauna.
There are economic opportunities to be found, but finding a balance is essential to preserve biodiversity. The government has taken some steps, but it will take all of us to preserve and protect.

This week, the team discuss the latest findings from the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) that suggest the end of North Sea production is nigh. The numbers were released as the UK finds itself in the midst of a gas crisis. Ironically, a power cut initially booted Damon out of the recording. Is this a sign of things to come?
Allister brings us up to speed on the smoke from the decommissioned Ninian Northern oil platform. He also caught us up on his trip to a new £1.6m simulator designed to transform the way oil platforms are decommissioned.
We also hear from Damon about the opportunities for Scottish companies in China’s ballooning offshore wind market, and the potential for wind power in the Philippines.
—————
The future of upstream oil and gas development in the North Sea is no longer clear.
The policy of maximising economic recovery has now been counterbalanced by the UK Government’s 2050 net zero target. But while renewables account for a rapidly growing slice of the energy mix, oil and gas demand continues to grow, on the back of the post-Covid economic boom.
On September 6, Energy Voice will host Future North Sea 2021, a virtual conference that will help you understand the challenges, and answer the questions raised by this tension between energy provision and climate action.
Bringing together experts from across the sector, Future North Sea 2021 will showcase three sessions focusing on Net-Zero Production, Decommissioning, and M&A, all designed to provide your business with the innovative solutions, strategies and products required to thrive in the North Sea of the future.

Oil spin, floating conferences and Fyne time

Discussions about Cambo are back on the menu in this week’s Energy Voice Out Loud as Ed tells us about Clean Creatives, a campaign group trying to persuade PR and advertising agencies to give oil and gas the boot.
After many a month, in-person energy events are now returning and Hamish was up at the P&J live this week covering the Floating Offshore Wind Conference. Back in the office (flat), there’s been updates on ScotWind bids, but for who?
Fyne-ally, Allister talks about plans to breathe new life into the Fyne field in the UK North Sea. He also pays tribute to Ithaca Energy CEO Bill Dunnett and industry stalwart Eric Marston who have sadly died.

On this week’s Energy Voice Out Loud, the team dive into some hot industry gossip with reports that Neptune is mulling a merger with Harbour Energy to create one of Europe’s largest independent oil and gas firms. Is it likely to go ahead, and who benefits?
Hamish then *strains* not to talk about Cambo (would it be an EVOL podcast without it?) during his round up of Offshore Europe and EV’s Future North Sea event. Activists can’t knock on the door of this virtual OE (and many are otherwise engaged protesting the plight of a certain Alpaca).
Ed then rounds us off with big moves in the drilling market as Seadrill emerges from Chapter 11 bankruptcy and Helmerich & Payne lines up for a stake in ADNOC Drilling.
