Myanmar, competition take-off and carbon capture bandwagon
Friday Jan 28, 2022
Friday Jan 28, 2022
On this week’s EVOL, top of the agenda is the announcement from TotalEnergies and Chevron on their exit from Myanmar amid an escalating human rights crisis. That decision means the future of the huge Yadana field, key to the energy security of both Myanmar and Thailand, is hanging in the balance.
Next, it’s not so much a war of words, but more of a one-way hammering as CHC uses choice language to convince competition authorities that its takeover of Babcock’s former North Sea helicopter business is not a threat to the market.
And rounding us off is the next stage in the UK Government’s plans to progress carbon capture developments, with bids being put forward for major emitters to join the clusters.

ScotWind, UK government on trial, and gassy projects in the Far East

Friday Jan 21, 2022
ScotWind, UK government on trial, and gassy projects in the Far East In this week’s Energy Voice Out Loud podcast, the team discuss the giant ScotWind auction and whether the supply chain can cope with the proposed 17 offshore wind projects over the coming decade.
In other news, Allister walks us through a High Court case that threw out a legal challenge claiming that the UK Government had acted unlawfully in its support for North Sea oil and gas. Did the activists that sparked the proceedings get egg on their face?
And Damon tells us about the prospects for Japan’s maiden offshore gas development in 30 years and the team explore the complexities of the energy transition in the Far East.

Garden parties, city in the sea, and exploration gambit
Friday Jan 14, 2022
Friday Jan 14, 2022
The team look at the huge downgrade in reserves and sizeable valuation cut for the Mariner field in the east of Shetland, in what is another blow to the North Sea after a flurry of issues in recent months.
Eco Atlantic and its plans for explorer Azinam in Africa is next on the agenda. With plans to take on a wider global portfolio, could this firm find success in major exploration in a similar model to Seapulse?
Rounding off is the so-called “great Scottish renewables robbery” with a political war of words on transmission charges for UK projects.

Shows, shortfalls and executive spats
Friday Jan 07, 2022
Friday Jan 07, 2022
The show is, if not quite over for Offshore Europe, certainly delayed until next year, it emerged this week, as the ongoing pandemic threw yet another spanner in conference organisers’ plans. Others will be watching the numbers closely and crossing their fingers that 2022 doesn’t turn out like 2020 or 2021.
Oil and gas prices have given some respite to companies, although friend-of-the-show Dale Vince has called for a windfall tax. Industry would suffer, but the optics may look appealing for politicians worried about inflation.
Finally, we look to Nigeria where Austin Avuru has come under fire from former employer Seplat for competing designs on a package of Exxon assets. While the dispute will not go down well with shareholders, it is nice to see enthusiasm for mature assets, even where it might boil over into slanging matches.

Gigawaters 04: The future is floating
Thursday Dec 23, 2021
Thursday Dec 23, 2021
The future, as far as offshore wind goes anyway, will be floating. As deployment ramps up, space that suitable for fixed bottom turbines will be at a premium, meaning developers will have to look further out to sea.
In this, the fourth episode of Gigawaters, EV’s Hamish Penman is joined by co-host Mairi Dudley, head of market development UK at Ørsted, as well as Carlos Martin, chief executive of BlueFloat Energy, and Joanne Allday, strategic business development manager at Port of Cromarty Firth.
Floating wind will be a necessity, and it brings with it a raft of benefits beyond being able to occupy deeper waters. It can be situated where the wind speeds are at their most bountiful, and the huge floating structures mean there is significant jobs potential. With the market in a relative nascent stage, Scotland has a clear chance to export its expertise too.

Gigawaters 03: Talking tech and inspiring innovation
Monday Dec 20, 2021
Monday Dec 20, 2021
Gigawaters dips into science fiction for this episode, exploring the futuristic technologies that will support Scotland’s offshore wind sector. There’s talk of artificial intelligence and robotics, and the innovative companies and individuals hoping to bring them to the market.
Energy Voice’s Hamish Penman is joined by co-host David Bould, lead research and development specialist at Ørsted, as well as special guest Vicky Coy, head of innovation projects at the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult.
Becoming a hotbed for developing game-changing renewable technology will benefit Scotland immensely, but it is a global market and many want to cash in. Fortunately, the country has the skills, as well as the pedigree, to suggest it can emerge as the Silicon Valley for offshore wind.

Gigawaters 02: Realising Scotland‘s renewable hydrogen potential
Thursday Dec 09, 2021
Thursday Dec 09, 2021
The fruits of ScotWind aren’t purely reserved for the offshore wind sector. A mass deployment of turbines will be a significant boon to Scotland’s renewable hydrogen ambitions, a point that’s explored and analysed in the second episode of Gigawaters.
For this edition, EV digital journalist Hamish Penman is joined by Rob Duncalf, head of UK, US and strategic projects in Orsted’s hydrogen arm, and Martyn Tulloch, head of energy system integration at Aberdeen’s Net Zero Technology Centre.
Up for discussion is the scope for oil and gas companies to branch out into hydrogen, what’s needed for Scotland to build an export market, and how the fuel can help to decarbonise other sectors.

Floating plans, onshore suits and James Bond baddies
Friday Dec 03, 2021
Friday Dec 03, 2021
How do you solve a leaky pipeline problem? If you’re Petronas you bring the export plant to the field, with the company launching FEED work for a floating LNG plant at the KBB field.
Nigeria also has leaky pipeline problems. While IOCs are getting out of the difficult onshore space they will not be able to avoid liabilities for problems they caused, possibly sparking a run of legal suits aiming to get in ahead of divestment plans.
Shell has a habit of naming exploration prospects in the North Sea after James Bond villains, Allister reported this week, leading to some speculation around who the best baddy was and whether Steven Spielberg films stood a chance.
