Inspiring a new generation of energy leaders – EVOL ✕ My Energy Future

The energy sector must continue to expand and evolve if key climate targets are to be met. Young people will be key to driving this change, filling tens of thousands of energy roles in the coming decades. 
But just because there will be opportunities aplenty, that doesn’t mean the industry can afford to sit on its hands and assume young people will flock to it. 
Fortunately, training and skills provider OPITO is alive to the need for a proactive approach.

Highway to hydrogen, stages of grief, and calls for Cresswell’s head

EVOL is on the highway to hydrogen this week with news that the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group is looking to build fuelling stations across the north of Scotland. It’s an ambitious plan with a lot of enthusiasm behind it, but does it have the wheels?

Football, offshore explosions, mud volcanos and CCS

On this week’s EVOL, we talk about the Pemex “ring of fire” in the Gulf of Mexico, which has raised some serious environmental questions. We then move on to Hamish’s tale of the “mud explosion” in the Caspian, which has the team scratching their heads.
The team then discusses the recent Piper Alpha memorial in Aberdeen that marked 33 years since the world’s worst offshore oil and gas disaster.
We also ponder news that Repsol is planning a final investment approval for a giant gas discovery in Indonesia. But in light of Repsol’s net-zero commitments, the Spanish company will also need to develop a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in parallel. We assess how realistic this will be.

Short sellers, shareholders and carbon lobbyists

ReconAfrica has been on a tear recently but short sellers have cried foul, raising concerns about the company’s viability. Has it found 120 billion barrels? Or nada? Either way, people on the internet have Opinions and are extremely keen to share them. 
On the subject of shareholders with opinions, a court has rejected a restructuring plan for Hurricane Energy. The higher oil price has helped but, if the dire reserves report was accurate, a day of reckoning is coming. 
ExxonMobil lobbyists have been caught on camera talking about their success in derailing carbon plans. The news will do much to confirm many people’s views of the oil industry - and little to make the case for the company’s role in the energy transition.
