There was never a chance that COP26 wasn’t going to dominate EVOL this week, and so it proved. Joined by special guest star, corporate finance partner David Bevan from this month’s sponsor, BDO, the team leaned into talk of net zero and targets, looking at how emerging economies can try to square their domestic needs with climate change. 
Aberdeen companies have been slower to commit to net zero targets, according to a recent survey from KPMG. The report also said that COP26 had influenced fewer than one in four firms, a point Allister could only lament given the pledge-riddled state of his inbox. 
A world away from Glasgow, Ghana’s plans for a Petroleum Hub got short shrift from the team. A local environmentalist has raised concerns about the plan and its impact on land. With refining capacity of 600,000 bpd, and a price tag of $60bn, the proposal seems at odds with local needs and realities – in addition to the world’s long-term oil needs.

What if you planned an industrial cluster and no one came? After some days contemplating the lack of gongs for Energy Voice at the Scottish Press Awards, normal service resumes, sans Allister and Jackie Bird.

Oil and gas prices are up, while Ed’s gas supplier is down, having joined the great retail collapse. Little seems to be able to stem the tide of rising prices, raising concerns around inflation and hopes for a mild winter. 
Even while prices are higher, companies do not seem to flooding back into exploration, raising the risk of further price rises in future. While the UK has a degree of energy security, a number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa are less well covered. These tensions may bubble over at COP26, with tough questions around emissions vs unemployment. 
Finally, Hamish and Ed reminisced about a grandiose plan to export renewable energy from Morocco to the UK. Similar plans have come – and gone – in the past but there is a sense of changing export priorities.
