The regular weekly Out Loud show sees journalists from Energy Voice come together to highlight and discuss the biggest stories of the week, and there are lots of other special series and in-depth episodes too. Appropriately enough, the show absolutely crackles with energy!

10 Point Pod 01 – Offshore wind
Tuesday Jan 26, 2021
Tuesday Jan 26, 2021
The UK Government announced its 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution amid much fanfare in November. The points laid out in the strategy pave the way to the UK’s net zero future. But what are they? Why have they been identified? And what impact will they have on the energy sector and the wider economy?
Leading the global energy conversation, Energy Voice has teamed up with EY to answer these questions and more in our brand new podcast boxset series, building towards a definitive briefing document for the industry in time for COP26.
The 10 Point Pod will run over the course of the next 10 months, and analyse the nuance of each point in order ahead of the climate conference in Glasgow.
Point 1 in the plan is ‘Advancing Offshore Wind’, so for our launch episode we have Benj Sykes, Vice President, UK Offshore at Ørsted as our guest speaker. He joins EVOL regular Ed Reed alongside Andrew Perkins, UK&I Corporate Finance Partner at EY, to delve into the detail of the Government’s offshore wind ambitions, examine what the UK can export to the world as well as what it can learn from others, and help everyone in the sector, no matter whether they work in fossil or renewable energy, understand the challenges and opportunities in making offshore wind really work for Britain and across the globe.
You can read the EY Consumer Sustainability Report, mentioned in the episode by Andrew Perkins, at ey.com/en_uk/power-utilities/consumers-hold-the-key-to-a-greener-future.
Subscribe to the Energy Voice Out Loud podcast today to make sure you hear not just all the episode of the 10 Point Pod, but the team's regular insider weekly updates too.

Exxon Exit, Ridin’ with Biden and Germanwings legacy
Friday Jan 22, 2021
Friday Jan 22, 2021
This week’s EVOL kicks off with news of NEO Energy entering exclusive talks to buy Exxon Mobil’s North Sea portfolio. The sales process has been rumbling on for well over a year, so will this bring it to a close? And how has Covid impacted the asking price?
It has been a busy week in the Land of the Free, with Total exiting the American Petroleum Institute and a new administration in the White House. We look at how that affects the energy landscape and whether oil producers will, in fact, be Ridin’ with Biden.
We round off the episode with news of a laudable mental health initiative for oil and gas helicopter pilots, which was galvanised by the tragic events of the Germanwings 9525 plane crash in 2015.

Ribs, redundancies and renewables

Where is the best place to have a heart attack? In the middle of the North Sea at 1 am might not seem ideal, but it turns out if you pick the right boat to be on, you might just be ok – and get back to flirting with nurses in the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Something else in need of resuscitation are employments prospects. The UK sector has recorded a number of job losses over the last 12 months, with Shell’s recent announcement adding another 330 to the toll. A pivot to new energies may be one way to add jobs but the government’s transition deal remains elusive.
Africa would also benefit from more focus on energy transition. For now, the continent seems locked in to a path of carbon dependency. While some talk about leapfrogging, the emphasis in Africa is on securing power generation – from any source available.

Gas for Ghana, ancient wells and M&A cogs turning
Friday Jan 08, 2021
Friday Jan 08, 2021
Allister, Ed and Mark shook off the festive cobwebs to dish out a healthy dose of oil and gas news in their first EVOL podcast of 2021. Ed sparked things into life with news of a milestone for LNG in Sub-Saharan Africa, with first deliveries in Ghana from Shell just around the corner.
Some North Sea drilled back in the days of Beatles and Clint Eastwood war films still haven’t been tidied up properly. We ask who’s getting on top of the issue?
And Mark, in typically jolly fashion, rounded up a couple of M&A deals featuring the legacy Bibby Offshore business, while SSE finally found a buyer for its gas portfolio.

ETIDEXMAS Special – EVOL ✕ EIC
Monday Dec 21, 2020
Monday Dec 21, 2020
This week on Energy Voice Out Loud, in association with the EIC, we have a festive treat for you in the year’s final episode. Mark is joined by Ryan Stevenson, head of Energy Voice, and some special guests to chat about the Energy Transition Idea Exchange (ETIDEX) in November that fired the starting pistol on the countdown to COP26. Ryan, making his pod debut, gives Mark the skinny on how ETIDEX was forced from its original physical setting to a virtual one as Covid-enforced restrictions thwarted his plans to host the event like Jools Holland. The chaps are then joined by Stuart Broadley, CEO of the EIC, who expertly moderates a discussion between some of the top-billed speakers from ETIDEX. Stuart, in a section one might call ‘Broadley Speaking,’ gathers reflections from Graham Bennett from DNV GL, Adam Morrison from Ocean Winds and Burness Paull’s Peter Ward. Mark and Ryan then ponder ideas for the next billion-dollar energy transition business and consider running away to start it up. Will they both still be here after the Christmas break? You’ll need to tune into the first episode of EVOL in January to find out!

Vaccines, Sage advice and hot Scott
Friday Dec 11, 2020
Friday Dec 11, 2020
This week on Energy Voice Out Loud, in association with the EIC, podders Allister, Ed and Mark weighed up the prospects of oil and gas offshore workers getting their hands on the vaccine any time soon, imbued with the wisdom of a top microbiologist.
Meanwhile, an activist investor told ExxonMobil bosses to start chasing money, not demand. Sage advice, but not always heeded by sector chiefs.
And lastly, what’s hot in the North Sea? Scott’s hot! CNOOC wants help tying the Ravel well back to its Scott platform without breaking the bank. That’s the same platform that Parkmead wants to use to develop its Greater Perth Area, while Hunting trialled its organic oil recovery technology there. What does that say about reports that CNOOC is trying to sell the platform?

New name, new fuel, new village
Friday Dec 04, 2020
Friday Dec 04, 2020
On this week’s EVOL, in association with the EIC, the team give their thoughts on news that Oil and Gas UK – the North Sea’s leading trade body – is considering a rebrand, potentially following others in taking fossil fuels out of the name as part of their net zero push.
There’s an update on a proposed “renewable energy village” near Peterhead. Big numbers promised for jobs and investment, but will it pan out, or be as much of an Aberdeenshire fairytale as Storybook Glen?
Keeping on big job promises – 2million a year is the estimate for Nigeria’s economy as leaders launch a push into the use of autogas, providing an alternative to petrol in the West African nation.

Storms, subsea Sunak and short cycle
Friday Nov 27, 2020
Friday Nov 27, 2020
Mark boldly stakes out a dispute involving a former OGA employee who claims to have taken issue with the numbers behind Hurricane Energy’s Lancaster development. Whatever the truth of the matter may be, Hurricane still appears to be in a hole with its plans and its convertible bond is looming in 2022.
Beneficent Chancellor Rishi Sunak set out plans for a £1.3mn investment in Aberdeen’s subsea hub hopes this week. The next time he is on Energy Voice Out Loud, though, he faces some tough questions from Hamish about what this actually means and what the goals may be.
Ed closed out the episode lamenting over Tullow Oil’s pivot away from free-wheeling frontier explorer to staid short-cycle producer. Paying down debt may seem like a laudable goal but where is the razzmatazz of old?

Friday Nov 20, 2020
Yesterday we fired the starting pistol on the countdown to COP26 at our Energy Transition Idea Exchange. Nearly a thousand people joined to hear from activists, engineers, industry bodies, law experts and more, and we’ve picked out highlights from them all for this special episode.
Three major themes emerged from the day – government plans and support, the outlook for skills and jobs, and what the pipeline looks like to hit targets – and even if you weren’t able to make it to the conference on 19 Nov, you’ll still be better briefed with the insight from our four panels in this special episode.

The net zero nerve centre – EVOL ✕ AREG
Tuesday Nov 17, 2020
Tuesday Nov 17, 2020
As the proclaimed “Oil Capital of Europe” it’s clear that Aberdeen will be at the centre of efforts to decarbonise Scotland’s energy supply. Extensive work is ongoing in the region to diversify its offering, and strides have already been made in establishing the Granite City as the home of net zero solutions. In this special Energy Voice Out Loud Xpertise Series (EVOL ✕) episode, in paid partnership with the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group, board member Gordon McIntosh talks to Hamish Penman about how he thinks the energy transition will shape the north-east and what needs to happen in order to address current concerns about Scotland’s renewables supply chain. Gordon also tells us about his time working as deputy minister of natural resources for Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, and what he’s hoping to take away from Energy Voice’s ETIDEX event later this week.
