The Megawatt Hour – Episode 6: Energy storage in a 100% renewable grid
Thursday Feb 23, 2023
Thursday Feb 23, 2023
In our first episode of 2023 we dive into arguably the most important aspect of how we are going to use and deploy energy storage – the network that underpins much of our electricity and energy systems, also known as the grid.
To discuss this, Energy Voice’s Andrew Dykes is joined by BDO corporate finance partner David Bevan and RenewableUK director of future electricity systems Barney Wharton.
The UK already has an ambition to run a zero-carbon capable grid by 2025, and to reach 100% clean energy all the time by 2035. Energy storage will be essential to meeting those targets and ensuring greater amounts of renewable energy can be usefully deployed – but getting there will also require some changes to how we as consumers use energy, and how the grid itself operates.
The Megawatt Hour is a special podcast series brought to you by Energy Voice Out Loud in paid partnership with BDO.

EVOL: A big rig, a boardroom bluster, and a contracts conundrum
Friday Feb 17, 2023
Friday Feb 17, 2023
She’s here and causing a stir - the Noble Innovator rig is now scraping the Aberdeen skyline as the largest vessel ever to dock there.
While some see the 200-metre jackup as more of a Godzilla than a neat part of the landscape, what does the rig’s arrival mean for business in the Oil Capital of Europe?
Elsewhere, Capricorn and NewMed’s merger has fallen flat and the board room has been purged. But well-kent face Chris Cox, formerly of Spirit Energy, is in the interim CEO chair. What’s next for a Capricorn determined for growth but can’t quite seem to get a deal over the line?
And IMCA – a marine contractor group representing 700 companies – has hit out at “unsustainable” contracting practices in offshore wind. With huge targets to be met and an inflationary cycle on the way, they argue this could halt investment in the renewable technology just as it is needed most.

Net Zero Nudge 4: vehicle electrification
Wednesday Feb 15, 2023
Wednesday Feb 15, 2023
Decarbonisation requires a shift away from liquid fuels, but is the infrastructure in place to support the number of EVs that we will need?
It’s essential that the shift to EVs is painless, otherwise those making the move will head back to the more familiar diesel and petrol options. The government has set a major target, of 300,000 charging points by 2030, but as yet there seems little chance that it will achieve this.
Maria Bengtsson, partner at EY, Neil Isaacson, CEO of Liberty Charge and Peter Domeney, COO of Tevva come together to talk over all things EV and how to ramp up progress and iron out the wrinkles.

EVOL: Penguinwatch, Pouyanne’s plans and quayside a-quiver
Friday Feb 10, 2023
Friday Feb 10, 2023
Demonstrating their opposition to Shell’s mega profits and environmental practices, Greenpeace climbed onboard an FPSO-transporting ship bound for the North Sea last week. As Hamish points out, windfall taxes just don’t seem to scratch the same itch.
France’s TotalEnergies has also had a bumper 2022, although with some significant potholes along the way. Russia, Mozambique and now India have thrown up their own unique challenges, demonstrating that it’s not all plain sailing.
And finally are bigger vessels on their way to Europe’s oil capital, Aberdeen? Watch out Northfield Tower, there may just be some new high points in town.

EVOL: North Sea oil spills, solar racing cars, and Asia feeding frenzy
Friday Feb 03, 2023
Friday Feb 03, 2023
The team are inspired to build an Energy Voice solar-powered racing car for an event in Africa. Ed explains how the solar car race is putting South Africa on the road to decarbonisation in a country that is largely powered by coal.
Allister provides an update on a North Sea oil spill at the Auk field and asks whether spending cutbacks have resulted in a flurry of HSE incidents over the past year. Are Ocean Quahog, which can live for more than 500 years, threatened by the oil leak?
And Damon rounds us off in Southeast Asia, where Harbour Energy is finding a warmer welcome than in the UK. There are also plenty of oil and gas projects for contractors to sink their teeth into within the region.

Bigger Faster Better 5: onshore wind
Friday Feb 03, 2023
Friday Feb 03, 2023
England has struggled to make progress in rolling out new onshore wind turbines in recent years, while Scotland has continued to make progress. Is this due to political problems alone?
Womble Bond Dickinson partner Chris Towner and SSE director for onshore renewables Finlay McCutcheon get together to look at the challenges, and opportunities, for the UK and Europe in rolling out more wind plans.
The UK is not alone in finding onshore wind problematic, although there are certainly areas of improvement. Who’s ahead, who’s behind? Come find out in this episode of Bigger Faster Better, a podcast box set series from Energy Voice in association with Womble Bond Dickinson.

EVOL: Windfall woes, top COP and the art of letter writing
Friday Jan 20, 2023
Friday Jan 20, 2023
Harbour Energy doesn’t bluff was the message the company sent to the UK government this week, linking the windfall tax with a move to cut in the hundreds of North Sea jobs. Coming at a time when oil prices remain healthy, the news demonstrates another shortcoming for the Energy Profits Levy – and another dark day for Aberdeen.
In the sunnier climes of Abu Dhabi, top Adnoc boss has got a new job – head of the next COP talks, which will be held in the UAE. He has talked a good talk of curbing emissions, but scrutiny will be high when the environmental grandees gather in the autumn to talk net zero and clean energy.
And finally, a disgruntled Serica Energy investor has written a letter complaining of shortcomings in the company’s deal to acquire Tailwind. While the purchase looks likely to go through, Jeremy Raper has won fans for his trenchant criticism and similes involving eggs, pans and a Rolex.
