Gigawaters 02: Realising Scotland‘s renewable hydrogen potential
Thursday Dec 09, 2021
Thursday Dec 09, 2021
The fruits of ScotWind aren’t purely reserved for the offshore wind sector. A mass deployment of turbines will be a significant boon to Scotland’s renewable hydrogen ambitions, a point that’s explored and analysed in the second episode of Gigawaters.
For this edition, EV digital journalist Hamish Penman is joined by Rob Duncalf, head of UK, US and strategic projects in Orsted’s hydrogen arm, and Martyn Tulloch, head of energy system integration at Aberdeen’s Net Zero Technology Centre.
Up for discussion is the scope for oil and gas companies to branch out into hydrogen, what’s needed for Scotland to build an export market, and how the fuel can help to decarbonise other sectors.

Floating plans, onshore suits and James Bond baddies
Friday Dec 03, 2021
Friday Dec 03, 2021
How do you solve a leaky pipeline problem? If you’re Petronas you bring the export plant to the field, with the company launching FEED work for a floating LNG plant at the KBB field.
Nigeria also has leaky pipeline problems. While IOCs are getting out of the difficult onshore space they will not be able to avoid liabilities for problems they caused, possibly sparking a run of legal suits aiming to get in ahead of divestment plans.
Shell has a habit of naming exploration prospects in the North Sea after James Bond villains, Allister reported this week, leading to some speculation around who the best baddy was and whether Steven Spielberg films stood a chance.

Fujairah, tidal talk, and driving off with EVs
Friday Nov 26, 2021
Friday Nov 26, 2021
In this week’s EVOL, the team are joined by Martina Petrosino from this month's sponsor, BDO, to discuss the latest goings-on from the world of energy. Kicking off, Martina leads on news this week that new buildings in England will be required to include electric vehicle charging points. The team discuss the potential for EVs, whether hydrogen fuel cell cars might fall by the wayside, and tackling “range anxiety”.
Then Allister discusses Energy Voice’s exclusive this week that Fujairah Oil and Gas, a partner in the Greater Brae Area, is allegedly defaulting on its hefty decom costs.
Rounding up, Hamish talks tidal with the government’s announcement of £20m in ring-fenced funding per year, with hopes of boosting investment in this high-potential sector.

10 Point Pod 11 – The plan comes to COP
Tuesday Nov 23, 2021
Tuesday Nov 23, 2021
It seems fitting to conclude the 10 Point Pod following the conclusion of COP26, just down the road. The United Nations’ delayed jamboree provided an ideal opportunity for the government to highlight its plans and reflect on the international nature of the challenge at hand.
Helping shed light on this in this episode, and reflecting on the whole span of The 10 Point Pod boxset, are EY’s UK&I Energy Market Leader Rob Doepel, and former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Amber Rudd.
While the 10 Point Pod is ending, it is clear that there are plenty of twists and turns along the road. More clarity will come from the government and there are likely to be a number of surprises, challenges and successes from industry.

Dutch divorce, Cambo conversation, and Nord Stream 2
Friday Nov 19, 2021
Friday Nov 19, 2021
Another busy week at Energy Voice Towers sees Allister and Hamish team up with John Strowger, BDO managing director at this month's sponsor, to discuss the latest goings-on of the energy world. First up, the trio dive into Shell’s decision to move its HQ from the Netherlands to London, with implications for share buybacks, the ongoing climate debate and, indeed, Brexit.
Then it’s (back to) Cambo with Nicola Sturgeon’s comments saying the field should not be greenlit. The team delve into what that means for the oil and gas workforce should Scottish independence be achieved.
Then, sticking with the question of domestic fossil fuel supply, John leads discussion on Germany’s suspension of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, setting back the Russia-backed project, and bringing a rise in UK and European gas prices.

The COP Shop 04: Taking stock
Thursday Nov 18, 2021
Thursday Nov 18, 2021
The deal’s been done and, as the dust settles on the Glasgow Climate Pact, EV Europe editor Allister Thomas and James Close, head of climate change at NatWest, dig into the detail.
Together they discuss the implications on the future of fossil fuels, and whether developing nations can trust the COP process as climate finance pledges fall short and “loss and damage” doesn’t get much of a look in.
But there’s positives to be taken on adaptation, carbon markets, pledges to mitigate climate impacts, and the role that small countries can play in the face of climate change. Not to mention the fact that countries are committed to coming back for COP27 with updated pledges next year. Tune in as we explore whether COP26 lived up to its promise.

The COP Shop 03: Reasons to be optimistic
Friday Nov 12, 2021
Friday Nov 12, 2021
Head of Climate Change at NatWest, James Close, joins Allister Thomas this week from Glasgow where he’s been for the whole of COP26, and, just returned from the floor to her offices in London, CEO of energy generation at Octopus, Zoisa North-Bond, joins them both – all to reflect on the only show in town.
Sponsored by NatWest, this mini-series aims to understand the issues and opportunities in energy and the energy transition, and what role green finance has in supporting and shaping that change, and with a lot of the narrative coming from the conference being a little downbeat, the team wanted to know: are there reasons to be optimistic about what COP26 has managed to achieve?
