Thursday May 04, 2023

As London converts itself into a giant Great British Bakeoff for the coronation, we take stock of the big news in this week’s energy calendar.
In a “man bites dog” news double-take, TotalEnergies is suing Greenpeace over claims around its emissions profile. Intimidation or a necessary step to set the record straight?
Cerulean Winds is moving forward with a £20bn floating wind decarbonisation plan for the UK North Sea. With ScotWind’s capacity crunch looming, the clock is ticking on local content.
And as offshore wind ramps up, delays remain around development of a skills passport for workers to make the renewables shift - due to the wind skills body.
It’s a busy week - bring your bunting.

Tuesday May 02, 2023
Tuesday May 02, 2023
Intermittency is often raised as the major problem holding back a shift to cleaner energy. Storing clean energy will be essential in providing security of supply, but how can governments and companies best drive the required uptake?
James Nicholson, partner at EY Parthenon, and Alex O'Cinneide, CEO and founder of Gore Street Capital, come together to dig into the pluses and minuses of batteries and more. As governments take steps to bolster domestic concerns, storage is moving front and centre in political strategising.

Friday Apr 28, 2023
Friday Apr 28, 2023
While bunting fever is on the rise in England, a “tsunami” of industrial action has taken root in the North Sea, with workers calling for changes to rotas, to pay and to conditions. With operators seeing profits rise, isn’t it time for the workers to see some upside?
Diplomatic relationships in West Africa have been strained this week, with Chad and Cameroon arguing over stakes in the export pipeline and Savannah Energy’s input. There are a lot of reasons for co-operation, but it seems it will require some soft talking to make progress.
The Ardersier Port is making progress with plans for a new £300mn investment from US private equity and big plans for a role in the Scotwind process. The new CEO has talked about extending the “hand of friendship” to other nearby ports, all of which will be needed to deliver Scotland’s offshore wind ambitions.

The energy transition, and projects such as Scotwind, provide an opportunity to build an economic future that benefits Scotland and local communities, as well as the environment and the climate. But when we talk about sustainable development, what do we need to do to build a future that is economically, environmentally and socially sustainable?
The second episode of the second season of Gigawaters sees Sustainable Growth Voice editor Felicia Jackson joined by Benj Sykes, the head of environment, consenting and external affairs at Orsted and Clare Kanakides, Head of Network Support at OnSide in exploring skills, jobs, a just transition and how such projects provide a unique opportunity for the younger generation.

EVOL: Sudan, Blacklists and Sludge
Friday Apr 21, 2023
Friday Apr 21, 2023
As horrific events unfold in Sudan, our Africa Editor Ed Reed takes us through the latest and unpacks what implications there are for energy infrastructure in the country.
Next, as widespread industrial unrest hits the North Sea, we look at the threat, perceived or otherwise, of blacklisting – or NRB – in the sector. RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch believes the practice is taking place among contractors and duty holders.
Rounding us off is the latest on the Shell Brent oilfield. As OSPAR countries demand removal of the “hazardous waste” within the field’s legs, could a change in stance from the UK regulator have big implications?

EVOL: NZTC, CMA and IOC frontiers
Friday Apr 14, 2023
Friday Apr 14, 2023
WTF? It’s acronym week as the team look at various jumbles of energy-related letters.
Hamish recounts a wide-ranging interview with outgoing Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC) boss Colette Cohen and her successor Myrtle Dawes, as the north east’s premier start-up incubator looks to its role over the next five years.
Meanwhile Andrew examines whether UK regulators are likely to weigh in on even more energy service mergers and acquisitions in the coming years, as corporate consolidation meets competition regs.
Finally Ed considers the trend towards offshore and deepwater drilling as IOCs and NOCs alike are increasingly looking to make plays in some of the world’s last great frontiers.

EVOL: Radiation, Clarification and liquefaction
Friday Apr 07, 2023
Friday Apr 07, 2023
Red flags have been waving this week with the Health and Safety Executive concerned about “ionising radiation” on one of TotalEnergies’ older projects in the North Sea. The company took action to tackle the problem, but there have been a number of concerns lately around safety in the region, including dangerous holes in decks and the unplanned flight of helicopter blades.
Allister drills into BP’s plans around the giant Clair field, with the company now working towards a final investment decision in 2024. Is there safety in numbers or will protests see the mass of field plans moving forwards as too tempting a target?
Around Africa a number of floating LNG plans are in the works, with the region set to lead the world for the next few years. While such plans are welcome, the big-ticket onshore LNG plans are still few and far between, with political risk and uncertainty deterring investors.

If the North Sea is feeling hard done by (and it is), OEUK’s latest report shows why, with investment and confidence in the basement. There was a nice breakfast to get stuck into though, where Equinor made some intriguing comments about Rosebank.
Namibia’s name as a nice nation to do business could be nulled, after Namcor’s chair was found with numerous narcotics; but nefarious forces may be at play. Ed also gets to grips with the metric of ‘street values’.
In Scotland, there’s a new first minister who wants to turn Aberdeen into green energy superpower. For now though, industry would settle for UK Government ministers making the short flight from London to the Granite City to unveil some energy policies.
