Passports, long nights with reports and FAR-cical plans
Friday Jun 25, 2021
Friday Jun 25, 2021
On this week’s EVOL, Mark’s talking passports… Nope, not about Brexit. It’s a new campaign for oil and gas workers to receive “training passports” to remove duplication, and reduce hefty costs, in order to transition to renewables work more smoothly.
We then move on to Allister’s tale about oil and gas operators handing back up to 1.1billion barrels of oil in the North Sea and the many (count em’, 30!) relinquishment reports published by the OGA. Then the dulcet tones of one Ed Reed rounds off the pod with Exxon leaving Mauritania and FAR Energy’s woes with exploration and shareholder returns.

10 Point Pod 06 – Jet zero and green shipping
Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
Modern life depends on aeroplanes and ships, but the carbon emissions are proving to be a major headache. The UK government has plans to transform the country into a home for greener transport, but some degree of international action will be needed if this change is to take root.
One bright spot is that customers are starting to focus on carbon emissions and seem willing to support a move to a greener future.
Mike Parr, EY Parthenon partner; Jacob Sterling, head of decarbonisation innovation and business development, AP Moller Maersk; and Chris Gear, project director for the Aerospace Technology Institute’s Fly Zero joined us to discuss how the world of transportation is changing.
Jet zero and green ships are the sixth point on the government’s 10 point plan. Next month, we’re putting down roots to talk about greener buildings.

ScotWind stampede, up a Nigerian creek and Equinor’s Knarr-ly plan
Friday Jun 18, 2021
Friday Jun 18, 2021
This week, Hamish, Ed and Mark discuss the latest entry of an oil giant into the bidding process for ScotWind, as TotalEnergies planted its flag in the … seabed… With just a month before the application window closes, we mull whether some oil giants might be conspicuous by the absence.
In Nigeria, energy bosses and dignitaries celebrated the start of construction of a $10b LNG train, or where they just pretending, by slapping some cement on a couple of breeze blocks? And why on earth were three of them in a canoe?
And Rosebank, which generated more news stories than could be reasonably expected of a project that hasn’t been going anywhere fast, finally appears to be going somewhere…fast.

Dynamite, Denmark and superfuel
Friday Jun 11, 2021
Friday Jun 11, 2021
It is an episode for the decommissioning devotees this week with tales of explosions, safety concerns and platforms going overseas, with a bit of green fuel thrown in for good measure. Mark kicks off proceedings by telling us about an intricate and subtle approach to breaking apart the Ninian Northern using shedloads of explosives. But despite looking like the newest film in the Die Hard franchise, it’s left many unimpressed.
There’s more disappointment in the decom world after Harbour Energy became the latest firm to confirm it would be sending work overseas, with the Balmoral platform due to travel to Denmark in the coming weeks. And there’s more goings-on in Port of Cromarty Firth where discussions are ongoing about creating a huge power-to-X (not a typo) facility.

Tracking the hydrogen transition – reflections on session one
Tuesday Jun 08, 2021
Tuesday Jun 08, 2021
Hydrogen is at the top of a lot of lists when it comes to the energy transition, securing attention from governments and companies around the world.
Following the first webinar in the Hydrogen Tracking Transition series, some of the speakers got together to shed some further light on their thoughts and how progress was coming.
Taking time out to reflect on progress, Daniel Grosvenor, renewables leader, Deloitte UK; Daniel Brock, co lead of Fasken’s Hydrogen Energy Advisory Team; and Rob Philips, energy director at Costain shared some insights into the issues — not least how to spark supply and demand seemingly simultaneously.
Time is of the essence for governments to provide the support and companies to take the plunge.
Speaking of time running out, sign up now for the second session of the Hydrogen Tracking Transition series, at https://www.trackinghydrogen.com. A top level group will drill down into projects, finance and infrastructure on June 17.

Blowing, towing and get going
Friday Jun 04, 2021

Cerulean Winds have a plan to tackle the North Sea’s electricity problem and golly but it’s a big one. The answer is offshore wind, and the company has set out a plan for a cool £10 billion pound investment. To get this going, pitfalls are ahead, of course, but the major challenge is likely to be the mess of regulators and permits.
Cleaning up a mess, finally, is Messiah Decommissioning, which is taking on the Herculean task of shifting the Hutton structure from the Cromarty Firth. Allister, who holds all stories on the Cromarty Firth in a place close to his heart, is on hand to talk EVOL through the ups and downs of the eye-catching pillars.
Finally, Nigeria dished out awards for marginal fields this week to various local companies. The regulator has called for production to start in 2022, which is likely to be a tough task given the way in which the round was carried out. Nigeria’s DPR has talked about learning lessons from the 2003 round, but there is a strong possibility it is making a host of new pitfalls in which its plans will founder.
