Rats, gas, and climate politics
Friday Oct 29, 2021

This week the team discuss what was popping at ETIDEX ahead of the global climate talks, as well as the influx of rats hitting Glasgow ahead of COP26.
In other news, Ed explains how TotalEnergies is coining it in from soaring liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices in Asia, while Hamish remains concerned that it could be a chilly winter in Scotland if the UK does not get its hands on more gas.
Meanwhile, Damon explores a recent report that claims carbon capture and storage (CCS) will not save Santos’ Barossa LNG export project in Australia, which is billed as one of the dirtiest projects in the world. Still, the company’s CEO is reportedly on his way to COP26 to lobby for international carbon pricing, which could help transform Australia into a CCS superpower.

10 Point Pod 10 – Green finance and innovation

Money talks, and is increasingly talking about new energy and the transition opportunities. In many ways, the challenges of a new energy system run in parallel to a new financial system, with new risks and new opportunities.
EY’s Tom Groom and Glenmont Partners’ Joost Bergsma get together to talk us through just how things are changing – and what is needed to keep up the pace.
Government will play a part in such discussions, but it must help facilitate investment from the private sector if the progress required will be delivered on time.

The COP Shop 01: COP26 preview and the role of green finance
Tuesday Oct 26, 2021
Tuesday Oct 26, 2021
This is The COP Shop, the brand new series from Energy Voice Out Loud in paid partnership with NatWest, diving into the most important climate summit in history, and the role of green finance in the battle against climate change.
In this episode, EV Europe Editor Allister Thomas is joined by co-host James Close, Head of Climate Change at NatWest, and special guest Rachel McEwen, Chief Sustainability Officer at SSE.
Together the trio discuss the role of COP26 in raising climate finance and the importance of the private sector in bolstering that sum, how green finance is helping decarbonise domestic energy supply in the UK, and the definition of a “Just Transition” on a global level.

An Acorn, a scandal and a CGI hotel
Friday Oct 22, 2021

What if you planned an industrial cluster and no one came? The UK government opted not to pick the Scottish offering this week, going instead for south-of-the-border options HyNet and East Coast Cluster. Amid calls for a recount and questions about just how many jobs a cluster may provide, the EVOL team pick over the politics and try to see a way forward.
One story seemingly going nowhere fast is Lekoil, which has run into an incredibly disputatious situation with its Nigerian subsidiary. Accusations and law suits are flying, with a happy ending looking unlikely.
‘The energy transition looks different in different places’ is a thought that is often bandied around. In the North Sea, Amazon is making a horror TV show called The Rig. Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia, the country’s investment fund is working on plans to convert an oil rig into a luxury hotel. Different folks, different strokes.

More Jackdaw, more gas, less Jackie Bird
Friday Oct 15, 2021
Friday Oct 15, 2021
After some days contemplating the lack of gongs for Energy Voice at the Scottish Press Awards, normal service resumes, sans Allister and Jackie Bird.
More than week after Shell’s plans for Jackdaw were snubbed, you’d think the Government might have provided some answers, right? Wrong! Worry not though, we’ve got some analysts to share their thoughts on the situation.
It’s then time for a good old fashioned, hard working, salt of the earth rebrand. LNG giant Qatar Petroleum is no more, and it could mark a step change in the Middle East. Ed ‘the powercut’ Reed tells all.
And the renewables bonanza in Asia doesn’t show any signs of slowing up. There’s been big offshore wind developments in Vietnam and Indonesia – Damon’s scepticism could be a thing of the past.

Jackdaw, Gas and Jackie Bird
Friday Oct 08, 2021
Friday Oct 08, 2021
Allister’s back from Glasgow having been ejected from the Scottish Press Awards (what do you mean Jackie Bird hasn’t listened to the Energy Voice podcast?).
Kicking us off, Hamish talks Jackdaw as regulator OPRED has decided not to approve the Shell gas/condensate development in the UK. Talk about timing amid a gas crisis…
Speaking of which: Damon Evans talks new measures to develop natural gas across Asia, shifting away from emissions-heavy coal. But how is this going to play out across Europe as winter approaches?
Rounding us off, AT is on Boris Johnson’s comments hinting at potential investment for the Acorn CCUS project in Aberdeenshire. With a decision just weeks away, the Scottish business community has its fingers crossed.

Up, up and away
Friday Oct 01, 2021
Friday Oct 01, 2021
Oil and gas prices are up, while Ed’s gas supplier is down, having joined the great retail collapse. Little seems to be able to stem the tide of rising prices, raising concerns around inflation and hopes for a mild winter.
Even while prices are higher, companies do not seem to flooding back into exploration, raising the risk of further price rises in future. While the UK has a degree of energy security, a number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa are less well covered. These tensions may bubble over at COP26, with tough questions around emissions vs unemployment.
Finally, Hamish and Ed reminisced about a grandiose plan to export renewable energy from Morocco to the UK. Similar plans have come – and gone – in the past but there is a sense of changing export priorities.
