Mexican tragedy, North African best enemies and Cambo kerfuffle
Friday Aug 27, 2021
Friday Aug 27, 2021
This week, the team reflects on the shocking and fatal explosion on a Pemex platform in the Gulf of Mexico. Allister asks whether the to-ing and fro-ing in Mexican oil policy could have played a part.
In North Africa, neighbours Morocco and Algeria just can’t seem to get along, though a key pipeline agreement appears to have been spared, for now. Ed tells all.
And Mark opens up another cold, frothy can of Cambo on his last EVOL episode before slinging his hook once and for all. But who are Mark’s least favourite oil industry figures? Find out on this week’s pod!*
*He doesn’t actually do that. Sorry.

The future of upstream oil and gas development in the North Sea is no longer clear.
The policy of maximising economic recovery has now been counterbalanced by the UK Government’s 2050 net zero target. But while renewables account for a rapidly growing slice of the energy mix, oil and gas demand continues to grow, on the back of the post-Covid economic boom.
On September 6, Energy Voice will host Future North Sea 2021, a virtual conference that will help you understand the challenges, and answer the questions raised by this tension between energy provision and climate action.
Bringing together experts from across the sector, Future North Sea 2021 will showcase three sessions focusing on Net-Zero Production, Decommissioning, and M&A, all designed to provide your business with the innovative solutions, strategies and products required to thrive in the North Sea of the future.

Tracking the hydrogen transition – reflections on session two
Thursday Aug 26, 2021
Thursday Aug 26, 2021
Company commitments are piling up for hydrogen prospects, but the industry is still in its early stages, and finance options still constrained. Fasken’s Shahrooz Nabavi and Deloitte’s Daniel Grover get together to mull over how best to prep the way for new projects, reflecting on session two of Hydrogen – Tracking Transition.
The industry is getting more efficient and price changes are coming, but the crucial question of demand volumes remains elusive – for now. The third session of the Hydrogen series will be held on November 18, following COP26. Hopefully this global environmental knees-up should see more clarity emerge on plans for hydrogen and its role in the pursuit of net zero.
Sign up to watch the two session of Hydrogen – Tracking Transition at www.trackinghydrogen.com, and to receive updates on the third session.

10 Point Pod 08 – CCUS
Tuesday Aug 24, 2021
Tuesday Aug 24, 2021
We’re not going to be able to stop burning hydrocarbons in time to hit the 2050 target. But what if we captured them instead?
With the UK government planning to set out a review on the costs of transitioning in the autumn, EY’s Graham Beal and Costain’s Dave Richardson got together to drill into the case for carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS).
New businesses will have to step up to meet industrial need for CCUS. The UK is well positioned to store CO₂, the North Sea will be an ideal home to capture gas, but we’re going to need to determine a commercial basis in order to get things going.

The H2 strategy has landed, climate report deep dive, and a ‘dream’ deal
Friday Aug 20, 2021
Friday Aug 20, 2021
This week, Mark and Damon were joined by special guest James Close, NatWest Group’s head of climate change.
They ran the rule over the UK Government’s veeerrrrrry long-awaited hydrogen strategy, and discussed whether it went too far, not far enough, or in the wrong direction entirely.
James then gave his thoughts on the bombshell IPCC report and the impact it can have on the way companies invest and do business. Also, the vital role methane emissions reduction efforts could play in buying industries some time.
And finally, Damon lifted the lid on a deal between BHP and Woodside, which was described as a “dream” by some, but resulted in a slump in share prices.

On this week’s Energy Voice Out Loud the team kick off discussion with Nicola Sturgeon’s calls for a review of oil and gas licences, including the controversial Cambo project in the West of Shetland. Will there be a U-turn from Boris Johnson or will this political football be kicked into the long grass?
Hamish Penman then outlines the UN’s latest report into climate change and the unequivocal impact of humankind on the planet. With the world set to miss the 1.5° target set out by the Paris Accords, does oil and gas still fit in the picture?
Then Ed Reed is calling (all the way from Canada! Isn’t technology wonderful?) to talk us through the latest with ammonia. Hydrogen’s star has shone brightly recently, but can this fuel play another big role to decarbonise industrial sectors as climate pressure persists?

Inspiring a new generation of energy leaders – EVOL ✕ My Energy Future
Wednesday Aug 11, 2021
Wednesday Aug 11, 2021
The energy sector must continue to expand and evolve if key climate targets are to be met. Young people will be key to driving this change, filling tens of thousands of energy roles in the coming decades.
But just because there will be opportunities aplenty, that doesn’t mean the industry can afford to sit on its hands and assume young people will flock to it.
Fortunately, training and skills provider OPITO is alive to the need for a proactive approach.
It has developed My Energy Future to inspire and inform a new generation of energy people with the help of “energy influencers”, two of whom joined EV editor Mark Lammey for this latest edition of EVOL X.
Deirdree Polak, data scientist at TotalEnergies, and Guilherme Castro, project innovation manager at Octopus Energy, talked about their experiences of working in energy and how they can make a difference through the My Energy Future programme.

Highway to hydrogen, stages of grief, and calls for Cresswell’s head
Friday Aug 06, 2021
Friday Aug 06, 2021
EVOL is on the highway to hydrogen this week with news that the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group is looking to build fuelling stations across the north of Scotland. It’s an ambitious plan with a lot of enthusiasm behind it, but does it have the wheels?
Mark then regales us with tales of woe from companies bearing the brunt of governments decision to pull the plug on support for oil and gas exports. The team questions whether it could prompt firms to up sticks, depriving the UK of much needed jobs and cash.
Finally, special guest Jeremy Cresswell, Energy Voice emeritus editor, discusses OPITO’s decision to launch an energy transition team, and how, after proposing a similar idea, there were calls for him to be introduced to a P45.
