Shell’s head start, UK oil on the cusp, and decom hot potato

In this week’s pod, in association with Dräger, the team discusses how green groups and a judge combined to give Shell a leg-up in the race to net zero. Did Shell say thank you? Did it heck.
Anyone who read Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce’s latest oil and gas survey will know that the oil and gas supply chain is already heading in the right direction. But companies could do themselves a favour by setting some emissions targets of their own.
Then Ed, Allister and Mark Axis also dug into a court case between two US oil companies with “far reaching implications” for North Sea decommissioning.

10 Point Pod 05 – Green public transport
Tuesday May 25, 2021
Tuesday May 25, 2021
Get on yer bike. Or yer bus. Or even walk. Just rethink whether you need to get in the car, whether it’s electric or a diesel clunker.
We’re going to need to do more than just electrify cars. There must be a shift to public transportation if the net zero goals are to be achieved. This will require various levels of government to provide support, to make cycling safer, to protect pavements – and possibly to deter people from jumping in the car.
Sayeh Ghanbari, UK&I business consulting leader at EY, and Chris Boardman, Olympian and Greater Manchester’s cycling and walking commissioner, get together to set the world to rights, one street at a time.
Green public transport is the fifth point on the government’s 10 point plan. Next month, and continuing the theme of movement, is jet zero and green ships.

Lose it, choose it, twos it

The IEA has set out a plan this week pooh-poohing the possibility of future exploration – amid a range of steps including major technological progress. The UK officially continues to allow exploration, even though the industry seems to be not particularly willing to seize the opportunity.
One new opportunity is the new SEQual platform, intended to simplify industry standards in decommissioning work. Responses have been mixed, with companies complaining of more bureaucracy and unnecessary red tape.
Finally, Eni and BP are maybe thinking about teaming up to work together in Angola. The West African state has had a few tricky years, but things are looking up. The move may open the way to a future sale, garnering the two cash and at the same time providing an out from those pesky carbon emissions.

A CCS arms race, an all-subsea solution, and pirate gas
Friday May 14, 2021
Friday May 14, 2021
In this latest, swashbuckling EVOL podcast, in association with Dräger, Energy Voice’s scurvy sea dogs, Mark, Ed and Hamish, plot a course through the week’s top tales. There’s a big jobs win for the north-east after SSE and Equinor announced plans for a CCS power plant in Peterhead – but will they succeed where others have failed? It’s then off to the West of Shetland where BP is exploring an ‘all-subsea’ option for the third phase of its Clair field. Finally, Ed sets a course for Nigeria and tells us about plans for a floating LNG facility on the nautically named Yoho field.

Sinking rig, Paper Tiger, and Afrenta
Friday May 07, 2021
Friday May 07, 2021
There’s no other place to start this week than with the news of the Velesto Naga 7 oil rig sinking off Malaysia. Our man in Asia, Damon Evans, takes us through the events. No one was hurt, but will there be an open inquiry? And how will the rig be recovered?
Staying with issues of safety, the team assess the consequences – or perhaps lack thereof – for a precarious decommissioning job for the Buchan Alpha oil rig, leading offshore union Unite to describe the HSE as “a paper tiger with no bite”.
Rounding us off, it’s a new venture from ex Tullow boss Paul McDade with Afentra. Just as smaller companies have filled the void left by majors in regions like the North Sea, this new venture hopes to do the same in West Africa. But how will that play out with climate change so strongly in the conversation?
